Make Your Own: Mulled Cider

Not only is this comforting cup healing and restorative but it will also make the house smell festive and welcoming, instantly getting everyone into the jolly mood.

Ingredients

Combine all ingredients in a saucepan, and heat just barely to a simmer over medium heat (be careful not to boil off the alcohol if making the alcoholic option). Reduce heat to low, cover, and let the juice/cider warm for between 30 minutes to 3 hours. Strain, sweeten to taste and serve warm in mugs.

If serving a crowd, triple the recipe and warm in a slow cooker for 3-4 hours. If you infuse slowly and do not let the juice/cider reach simmering point the mulled juice/cider will become clear. If you are in a hurry, infuse on a higher temperature for less time - this will result in a cloudy mulled juice/cider.

Chilled Cider Punch

Make as above, however once the juice/cider has finished infusing, leave to get to room temperature and then chill in the fridge for a minimum of 2 hours. Once cold pour into a jug or punch bowl of ice adding apple slices and any other fruit you wish to use to garnish then serve immediately.

This sachet also works with pear juice or pear cider.

Properties of the Healing Spices

"Cloves and ginger are especially good for warding off respiratory ailments and any cold or flu symptoms. They also help relieve headaches, nausea, muscle spasms, tension, & nerve pain. Cinnamon is very good for reducing inflammation in the body making it helpful for people with autoimmune disorders such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Cinnamon also has the amazing ability to stop yeast infections, candida, and menstrual cramps. Star anise is highly beneficial in the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, rheumatism, back pain, shingles, herpes, halitosis, and sinus infections. It is also commonly used as a digestive aid and can help to relieve gas, constipation, cramping, bloating, heartburn, and indigestion." Anthony William

As well as cloves, ginger, cinnamon and star anise the Artisane Mulled Cider Spice Sachet also contains cardamom that has similar health properties to that of cinnamon and ginger. Cardamom is great for the digestive system and stimulates the appetite as well as eases nausea, indigestion, and cramping. It also helps to kill off any food borne bacteria in the digestive tract which helps to protect against food poisoning and gastric distress. Cardamom works well as a diuretic and can reduce bloating, water retention, and swelling.
